Daily Update--Dec.17/09

Tonight students do not have any homework that is due tomorrow. The dance is tonight.
Tomorrow the pancake breakfast starts at 8 until 9am. We will be in the classroom after that until 10:30. The entertainment assembly will follow. We are leaving at 12:30 for the hockey game in Morden and will arrive back at school by 3:40.

The only homework that the students have over the holidays will be to read; and if they have time, they could also work on the novel cover jacket and mobile. Both of these assignments are due by the end of the first week back in January.

I will not be writing a blog tomorrow night,so I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, Merry Christmas, and all the best to you and your family in the new year!

Daily Update--Dec. 16/09

ELA--Work on your book project and your two novel assignments. Hopefully the project could be completed by Friday to keep you on schedule. The novel assignments will be due first week we come back in January.

Math--Get corrections done,your test signed,and return to school tomorrow.

Science--STUDY!!!Your test is tomorow morning.

8C--Get your map quiz signed and returned to school tomorrow.

We watched the movie "THe Outsiders" today, and the concensus was that the book was much better. More details are provided in a book. I am glad to hear that they would perfer to read a book instead of watching a movie, or atleast read the book before watching the movie based on that book.
The grade 8 students will be having their Christmas party tomorrow. We plan on playing in the gym for 35 minutes, then going to play outside for the rest of the time. We have asked the students to bring appropriate outer wear for tomorrow.
Remember that tomorrow is the last day to buy tickets for Friday's Cougar hockey game. The price is $6.00.

I apologize for no update yesterday but I was away sick yesterday. Hopefully students were working on the on-going assignments.

ELA--All Christmas writing is due tomorrow. Please have it completed before you arrive to class. Do not start the good copy in class. You also need to be working on your book projects. There are the two novel assignments that are also in the works.

Science--You should be reviewing for Thursday's test.

Phys.ED.- Your fitness run is tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will be watching the movie,"The Outsiders". You can bring in munchies and a drink for yourself if you would like to. We will be watching it in the afternoon.

Sorry that there was no update yesterday; I was at an inservice.

ELA--A few students did not write their Unit 4 vocabulary test last week due to different circumstances. They will write tomorrow. Please read and review Chapters 11 and 12 for tomorrow's comprehension test. Your Christmas writing is due next Wednesday. I need to edit with students. You should also be working on your book project.

Math--Projects are due tomorrow. The MId-unit review which was assigned yesterday is also due. Unit test is on Friday. REVIEW!!!

8C--Your 3 point approach and the questions # 1 to 6 are due tomorrow.

8S--Your Health projects/presentations are due Friday.

ELA--Novel questions are due tomorrow. You should also be working on your book project and Christmas/Winter writing.

Daily Update--Nov.20/09

ELA--Unit 4 vocabulary booklet is to be completed for Tuesday. You should be working on the rough draft of the letter to Sodapop. No due date has been set yet.

SS--You should be reviewing your notes and textbook in preparation of the test on Wednesday. Remember that your notes are to be handed in for test marks. We will be having a gallery walk on Monday so you have an opportunity to update and add to your notes.

Health--You should be thinking about and working on your Anti-smoking presentation.

8C--Your test is on Tuesday. Use your evenings to prepare.

Report cards were sent home today. Please remember to bring back the signed envelope to school on Monday. I also handed out letters on Thursday regarding Parents' Day appointment times. Many students handed them in on Friday. I was able to accomodate almost all first choices. I gave the papers back to the students so parents have a copy of the choices. Portfolios will be going home on Monday.

ELA--We will be correcting the remainder of the booklet for unit 2 vocabulary tomorrow. Students should decide on the topic of their "A" memoir in creative writing. If they come to class tomorrow with the idea, then they will go directly into writing their rough draft. Students should also be working towards their first reading response.

Math--Review sheet was handed out today with questions directly in preparation for tomorrow's midunit test. The questions to be done are # 2,3,4,5,7 i)ii)iii) and b, #8 a and b, #9 b and c, #10 a and b, #11 a,b, and c for tomorrow. We will correct them in one period and then write the test in the second Math class.

ELA-We have signed an October contract,so keep reading. You should be working on your first reading response which is due by the end of the week. Vocabulary unit 2-antonyms is due Monday, and the rest of the booklet is due Tuesday.

Math--Booklet 1.4 on Calculating Powers is due Monday. Review powers of 10 because I could give you a surprise quiz on just that on Monday. Your mid-unit test on perfect squares, squaring a number, square roots and estimating square roots will be on Tuesday. Extra help will be available on Monday and Tuesday at noon.

Health--Health poster in due Friday, Oct.9.

ELA--I returned the students' vocabulary tests today. They need to make the corrections, have you sign the test, and then return it to me tomorrow. First reading response should be done by next week.

Daily Update--Sept.21/09

ELA--Vocabulary Unit 1 test will be on Thursday,so students need to start review tonight. I suggested that they review 10 words tonight, 10 tomorrow night and then review all again on Wednesday night. They need to know the definitions of the words, how to use them correctly in sentences, as well as synonyms and antonyms.
--They should have started their rough draft of their bio-poems. We will be working in class on the poems tomorrow.

Math--Page 15 of the 1.2 handout. Complete #5,#7,#9 i,iii, #11,#12 i),iv),and vi,and #13 e,f,g,h for tomorrow.

SS--I explained the Personal Time line today and showed some examples. Students should start thinking about events and pictures that they want to include on their timeline.

8C--Have your list of events and questions with answers in class tomorrow as we will start your timelines. The timeline due date is tentatively set for next Tuesday, Sept.29.

Welcome to a new school year!
It has been an exciting two days for me meeting my new class of students. I hope the students have also had two good days so far.
I have given the students this blogsite so they will now be able to check it every night for homework and/or other important information.
Parents also can have access to this site, so please feel free to check it daily.

I hope to see you at the Open House tonight.

The only homework 8T has tonight is to read for atleast 20 minutes, and their Science title page is due tomorrow.

Same homework as yesterday, but I wanted to remind the students that tomorrow afternoon we will be involved with activities with the other two classes in the afternoon. Daily Update-June 23/09

By Thursday at 3:40, students need to hand in their book projects, and they should hand in their SS project. That includes their illuminated letter and one of the following--a hat, a shield or a guild sign, all representing the Middle Ages. We may have some time in class to work on those assignments tomorrow and Thursday,but some must be done at home.

We will be watching the movie version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" tomorrow, so I mentioned to the students that they can bring in any munchies or other food for themselves to eat during the movie.

By Friday noon we will also be cleaning out students' lockers, so binders will be coming home at that time;but not before we complete our portfolios, which I hope to complete by Friday morning.

SS--We will begin presentations of our vocabulary words on Wednesday.

--We are putting together our scrapbooks, so students need to be gathering and deciding on the five best pieces of writing that they want to include in their scrapbooks.

Math--Final assessment is tomorrow morning. Review concepts again tonight.

ELA--Your essays are due by Thursday morning.

Math--The Math assessment is tomorrow and Thursday. Please use the worksheets that I have given to you as review. We have one class first thing in the morning if you have any questions to go over.

SS--Your projects and models are due tomorrow. We will rehearse tomorrow in class and then listen to the first presentations.

Daily Update--Feb.27/09

ELA--Essays are due by Thursday. A few students need to conference their outline with me asap. Others can have their first draft ready for conferencing.
--Work on book projects--due date March 11.

Math--Review sheets are due Monday. Continue to review for the Math assessment which is next week Wednesday and Thursday. Attend extra help on Tuesday.

SS--Egyptian projects including the models are due Wednesday. Oral presentations will also begin on Wednesday.

If you are wanting to use your own badminton racket for gym class, remember to bring it to school for Monday. Remember to lock your locker if you have a racket stored in it.

Daily UPdate--Feb. 26/09

ELA--All book projects (4 to 6) are due by March 11. Students have been reminded as to how many they have completed up to date, so some need to get busy!
--Essays are due by next Wednesday or Thursday. I need to conference with everyone.

Math--Assessment is next week Wednesday and Thursday, so we have been reviewing every day and students have review sheets to work on every night. Extra help is being provided at lunch hour.

SS--We will begin oral presentations of their Egyptian projects next Wednesday morning, so students must complete their research, their posters,and their model by that date.

ELA--You should be writing the first rough draft of your essay.
--By March 11, you should have 6 book projects handed in.

Math--You should be reviewing for your assessment which will be on March 4 and 5. A list of topics is in your binder.

SS-Work on your Egypt project. This is due near the end of the week.

Science--Your test has been postponed until Wednesday. Use the time to prepare.

Tomorrow we are going skiing, so the students who signed up should be at the school by 7:45 and we will be returning by 5:15.

ELA--Work on the essay--the outline should be worked.
--Work on the next book project.

Math--We are reviewing for the Math assessment. Have review sheet #3.1 done for Monday.

SS-Work on your project. Due date--end of next week.

Science--Review. Use some the other sample tests as review. Test on Tuesday. Students who are skiing that day will write on Wednesday.

Math assessment will be written March 4 and 5. We will reviewing in class, and students will have review sheets to study from.

ELA--Students should be researching their essay topic and should now be writing their thesis statement. Filling in their essay outline will be the next step to work on. This essay should be editted with me early next week, with the final copy being done hopefully by the end of next week.

Math-- A worksheet of fraction review is due tomorrow.

Science--Knowledge charts were due today with sample test due tomorrow.

SS--Continue researching your Egyptian topic. This project should be due by the end of next week.

If you are planning on going skiing next Tuesday, money and forms should be in tomorrow.

--You have only a few weeks left to complete your book projects ,a total of 6or more.

Math--Prepare yourself for a surprise quiz on percent conversions. Complete the 4 new board questions.

Science--Your knowledge charts are due tomorrow, and the sample test is due Friday. These are worth marks, and will help you prepare for Tuesday's unit test.

Do not forget to bring in your money and permission forms for our trip to the U of M.

SS--Continue researching your topic. Project due next week.

Information regarding our grade7 and 8 ski trip was sent home today with the students who were interested. The forms and money should be in by this Friday or Monday.

Daily Update--Feb. 13/09

ELA--Students should work on their short story unit project to have it completed by next Wednesday or Thursday.
--Decide on your essay topic and have some discuss at home about the different topics.
--Your fifth book project is due around Feb. 23.

Math--Review the conversion chart to prepare for a short quiz on Tuesday (a surprise quiz).

SS--Complete your topic proposal (pink sheet) by Tuesday. Gather information on your topic;you can use the Inquiry chart if you want to. This project is due within 2 weeks.

Science--We dissected a sheeps' hearts today, and the students did a great job.

Health--A few groups need to present their jingles next class. What a wonderful performance by today's presenters!I thoroughly enjoyed the singing,lyrics, and guitar playing.

Remember to bring in your waiver form, permission sheet, and $15 asap.

ELA--Work on your short story project.

Math--Prepare for a short surprise quiz on percent conversions (mental math).

SS--Continue research on your Egyptian topic.
Health--Jingle presentation tomorrow.

Students will be coming home with a letter, a waiver form, and a permission slip. They will be going on a field trip to the U of M on March 12. It will cost $15.00. Forms and money should be in as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.

Daily Update--Feb.11/09

Well it was quite a day today after the weekend and two storm days, but we persevered.

ELA--Students should be completing their character analysis sheet and their character collage in their short story project so they are on schedule.
--They should be working on their next book project. I have spoken to a few individuals who need to get these completed. The date line for all book projects is March 11.

Math--Worksheet-#8,9,13,14,16, and 19(in problem format), and #21 for tomorrow. I returned their first practice surprise quiz which they should study from because they will have a surprise quiz on percents before the end of the week.

SS- Begin research on your chosen Egyptian topic. List questions/subtopics.

Health--Jingles will have to be presented on Friday.

ELA--Short story project--Finish the third frame and start working on the character analysis and collage.
--The rest of the vocab booklet is due Monday.

Math--Worksheet 4.2 # 4,5,6,7, and 10 for Monday.

SS--Decide on an Egyptian topic for your project.

Science--The students who did their presentations today did a WONDERFUL job. Way to go!! The rest of the class must present theirs by Wed. The heart diagram is due MOnday. This is in preparation of our heart dissection next Tuesday, and our unit test(date not yet determined).

Health--Jingles due Tuesday. Bone location quiz next week.

Science--Short quiz tomorrow. Study the fill in the blanks in the booklet. Work on your heart diagram which is due MOnday. Practice the oral presentation which must be done by next Wed.

ELA--January calendars are due tomorrow.
--Fourth book report is due this week.
--We started our Short Stories project today so students should first read their list of stories tonight. They can then start working on the story frames tomorrow. This is a 2-week project with class time being used as well as homework time.

Science--Begin your drawing of the heart and/or working through the booklet. No due date as of yet.

Health--Quiz on the scientific and common names of the bones on Thursday. The jingles will be due after another class of work.

Daily Update-Jan.30/09

ELA--Over the weekend the students need to work on and complete their Root Word projects. They know to work on writing descriptive,long sentences that follow different patterns.Due Monday.
--They also need to read and work on their fourth reading project.

Math--No homework as we are just starting a new unit (percents)and some students wrote a rewrite on fractions today.

Science--They handed in their Aim #11 today and we will continue learning about the heart in preparation of the heart dissection which hopefully will be end of next week.

SS-We are just beginning the new unit on Egypt.

Health--We are learning the location of 21 bones and they will be writing jingles with a partner. The purpose will be to learn and remember the location of these bones.

The ELA assessment will be completed this afternoon,to the great relief of the students. They conducted themselves in an orderly, studious mannner and I am very proud of them,once again. Hopefully they have done a fine job in the assessment.

We completed our first section of the ELA assessment this afternoon with expository writing and the reading of two short stories. Tomorrow afternoon we will continue with the short stories and the writing.

ELA--Students need to work on their Root Word project. The due date is either this Thursday or (if they need time) Monday.

Math-Get the test corrected and signed. Rewrite is Thursday.

Math--Get your unit test signed and have the corrections done for tomorrow.
--Students who received less than 70% will be working during noon hour for the next week and then will be having a rewrite. This rewrite is open to others,provided they are in for extra help as well.

Our ELA assessment begins tomorrow afternoon. Please be certain to have a dictionary, pens, pencils and erasers with you.

Sorry there were no updates Tuesday or Wednesday, but I was celebrating Ukrainian Christmas with my family. Hopefully students worked on the assignments which I had left with the substitiute. All were written done on the homework board and reviewed at the end of the day.
