The only homework the students have over the holidays is to read to reach their December reading goal, and to complete their next book report which is due Tuesday, January 10.

Daily Update--Dec.20/11
ELA--Students wrote their chapter 11 and 12 comprehension test today. The only homework they have now is to work on their second book project which is due either by Thursday, Dec.22 or Tuesday, January 10 (if they want to work during the holidays). They are also working on the cover jacket for The Outsiders. They are entering this in our class contest, and it is due January 13.
Math--We started fractions today. 6.1 worksheet was assigned in class.
Tomorrow I will be going sking with the students. They need to be at school by 7:3o so we can board the busses and leave by 8, the latest. Those not sking will have regular classes. On Thursday, the grade 8 students will be going curling in the morning (after the pancake breakfast) and it will cost $2 and the yellow permission form needs to be signed. If they would like to go to Winkler in the afternoon to watch a movie, it will cost $10.00, and a pink permissson form needs to be signed and brought to the office. If they remain at school, acitivities will be happening here as well.

Today in ELA students have three novel assignments which they are taking home to get signed. They need to return these tomorrow. They should also have their rough draft of the Christmas story done for tomorrow unless they have spoken to me. If they would like to get ahead of things, they can work on their second book project and complete it by next Thursday;otherwise it is due January 10.
Math--We have started review for our Unit 4 test. In the textbook, page 150, complete questions 1 to 6, and #9 for tomorrow. We will decide on a test date in tomorrow's class.

Daily Update--Nov.15/11
ELA--The Chapter 3 assignment step 1 and 2 should already be done and been self-editted and had a teacher edit. Work on step 3 which deals with a rough draft of the reflections. I said you should have atleast half of that done for tomorrow. Chapter 2 comprehension test needs to be signed and handed in tomorrow or you will be spending time with me at noon. "Evidence of Learning" vocabulary illustrations were handed back today, and many need to be redone because they are not acceptable. You have until Friday to redo them following the suggestions written on the back of the paper.
Math--Mental Math conversion chart of fractions is due tomorrow. Check on the patterns that arise in the chart.

Daily Update--Nov. 7/11
ELA--Students' "Evidence of Learning" illustration is due tomorrow at the beginning of class. They need to be reviewing the words in Unit 3 as the unit test is on Wednesday. Their 3rd IRP is due by Wednesday. Hopefully some can be handing in a 4th IRP at that time too. We started a creative writing piece today on the subject of "Heroes". For tomorrow students need to have their web of atleast 7 traits of their chosen hero. We will begin writing the paragraph tomorrow.
Math--I gave the students 3 board questions to calculate for tomorrow. We are working on conversions in percent.

ELA--For tomorrow the students need to have their Mind Map of the characters in the novel completed and ready to hand in at the beginning of class. We started reading chapter 2 of the novel today, and the students need to finish reading the chapter and be prepared to write a comprehension test on the events of that chapter on MOnday. They need to read the chapter, and I suggested that they read it again and pay close attention to details. Their third IRP is due by Nov.9.

WOW! November 1st!
ELA--We tallied up our pages today for our October reading goal and it looks like the students reached and even surpassed their class goal of 20300 pages which is wonderful. They have now signed a November reading contract and have set the class goal at 22222 pages for December 1st. Their third IRP is due by November 9. I have stressed that there are many who could challenge themselves and try for four IRP's because they have read the books. Go for it, 8T!

ELA--We started reading chapter one of the novel, The Outsiders. A Venn Diagram has been assigned in which students need to compare and contrast the two gangs. This is due no later than Thursday. We also started Vocabulary unit 3. The page with synonyms and antonyms will be due Thursday with about 10 minutes of class time tomorrow to work on it.

Math--Math tests need to be signed, and corrections done. The students who received less than 75% on their test must be in for extra help every noon hour until Friday at which time they will write the rewrite. Use the test questions as review.
Science: Functions test is on Thursday.

Music: Test on Thursday.
Any students interested in attending the Fair Trade Conference in Morden on November 30 need to have the 3 forms filled out and returned to me before next Tuesday. I can take only 6 students to the conference,so please let me know if you are interested. If any parents need further information, please contact me.

I will be having extra help classes at noon next week with a Math test rewrite on Friday. Anyone who received less than 75% must come in for extra help in order to write the rewrite. Anyone else is welcome to come as well. There is also an asssignment from Thursday's class which was worksheet #1.4 on Powers--#3 a and b, #4a, #5 b,d, and f,#6, #7, and #12 for Tuesday. Most students should have completed this in class.

Daily Update--October 3/11
Students signed their October reading contract today. With the preliminary count, it looks like we have reached our September reading goal so students are entering their party suggestions and we will decide at a later date as to what type of party we will have and the date.
Tonight the students need to study for their Science test which is tomorrow. They have the checklist and their notes.

ELA--Our reading contracts are due Monday so I hope the students are challenging themselves to reach their individual goals. Some students asked to have their IRP handed in on Monday so make certain they are.
Math--We will be writing a Mid-Unit Test on Wednesday. Students have been given a checklist in their daily assignment scribbler. They also have a review worksheet and have been assigned #2,3,4, 5 b and c, #8 a and b, and #12 a for Monday. We had a short in-class assessment last week and a rewrite yesterday. Daily Update--Sept.26/11
In ELA, the students are working on their "Evidence of Learning" illustration. They have been given an outline describing the criteria. This is due either Wednesday or Thursday. We will also be writing a unit test on Vocabulary Unit 1 words on Thursday so the students should be reviewing the words every night. Go over definitions, synonyms, and be able to use the words correctly in their own sentences. Their first IRP reading response is also due by the end of the week. If for some reason they need the weekend to complete it, they need to speak to me before Thursday.
In Math, we did not correct the work that was assigned on Friday because the Gym Riot happened today during our Math class.
In Science, the students need to try and catch some grasshoppers for their dissection.

Daily Update--Sept. 22/11
In ELA we chose our words for the "Evidence of Learning" assignment. Students need to illustrate the word as well as have the synonym, definition, and a complete, descriptive sentence along with the illustration. We went over the hand out and they were shown some examples. We will work on this tomorrow and will choose a due date at that time.
Math--We reviewed a new concept--estimating square roots-- and I assigned from worksheet #3.3--# 1 to 4 to be done on the sheet, and then #5 and 7 to be done in their scribbler. Due tomorrow.

In ELA, we did not get a chance to correct the green adjective sheet, but we will so do tomorrow. Please check to make sure you have it completed. You should also have chosen the book that you will write your reading response to, and begin writing it. The first IRP (reading response) is due end of next week.

Daily Update--Sept.19/11
ELA--Today we corrected the section on synonyms and antonyms in the vocabulary unit. They have now been assigned the remainder of the booklet due Wednesday. I hope students will begin their individual reading response by first choosing which book they will want to respond to.
Math--We corrected the worksheet #3.1, and now I have assigned from the textbook pages 85-87--# 6,8,10,12,15,17,19, and #25 due tomorrow. They did have atleast 20 minutes in class to work on this. It is to be done in their daily assignment scribbler and in pencil. We will be correcting in class tomorrow.
I have reminded students that if they have not done so yet, they need to hand in their registration form ,their paper fee money, their signed purple information letter, and their vaccination form. Some students have not handed in their kleenex boxes yet.

ELA--The students should be reading every night. The rough draft of their friendly letter is due tomorrow so they can self-edit, and then have the good copy completed and handed in by Friday, the latest. I want them to edit on their own as this will be the first writing sample of the year. As we do more writing, I will be editting with them.
I handed out an informational letter to the students (printed on purple paper) to give to their parents. It is a short summary of what has already been covered in class, as well as an opportunity for me to inform the parents of what is going on in the subject areas. I have asked the students to get this letter signed by their parents, and return the letter to me tomorrow.

ELA--The students are reading every evening for atleast 20 minutes minimum. They are also working on their friendly letter to me. We have discussed the format and the criteria for this letter. A sample has also been given to the students. They are to have the rough draft done by the end of tomorrow's ELA class. They will then have to proof read and edit it, and have the final good copy completed for Thursday, we hope. That is the plan at this time, and we will see how everything goes in class.
Science-- Their title page is due tomorrow.
Registration forms and paper fees are due to the office, as well as the letter that was sent home on Friday in regards to vaccinations.

The gym riot will be held on Monday afternoon, so students are encouraged to wear their team colours.

Welcome everyone to our new school year!
I hope the students had an interesting day today. I was excited to meet all the grade 8 students, and am looking forward to a great year.
Students were given my home phone number, my school email address, and this blog site which I hope they have shared with their parents. I will try to update the site every night with homework, test dates, and due dates.
For tomorrow, students need to bring in their signed registration package, their $5 paper fee, and their school supplies which we talked about today.

We had a good time today at St. Malo Park.
Tomorrow the students will need to clean out their lockers, finish up their scrapbooks and their portfolios, and we need to remove all bio poes from the wall. There are also projects and posters that the students will need to take home. I have books for the students as their year-end present from me that they will need to choose tomorrow. We have also planned to go to Syl's so I have asked the students to bring some money to school tomorrow. A few other activities are planned for tomorrow.

Daily Update--June 24/11
Students will need to come prepared for our field trip to St. Malo on Monday. They will need to be dressed for the weather, and it is advisable that they bring runners and not sandals as footwear. They can bring sandals to change into later. It may also be wet in certain areas so if they wanted to bring rubber boots, they could do so. They should bring lunch,;however, there is a place to purchase some food at the site.

I hope the students enjoyed themselves at the pool today. The weather was a bit cool, but they all swam.
Tomorrow we will be completing the reading of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and hopefully watching the movie.
Students need to sign up on the main list as to what they plan on bringing for food for the Roman Games Day on Wednesday.

ELA--Students need to get their last essay evaluation sheet signed and returned to class. We will update our calendars for the last time on Monday.
SS--All Roman games need to be in by 9:00 on Monday. Please sign up on the main list in the classroom as to the food you will be bringing to the Roman Games Morning. I hope you gave your parents the letter yesterday outlining this activity.
Monday we will be joining the grade 7's at the pool for a year end celebration. Please check the weather and dress accordingly for the day. Student council will supply hotdogs and drinks, but if you think that may not be enough lunch for you, please bring extra food for yourself.

Daily Update--June 14/11
Tomorrow is our Math exam. Students have many worksheets from which to gather questions. The textbook will also have questions along with the answers (at the back), so hopefully there are plenty of questions from which to study. Students need to bring pencils, erasers, and a calculator to class tomorrow. The calculator cannot be on an Ipod or other similar device--just a regular calculator.
The students are also working on their Roman games which are due either by Friday if they can, or by Monday, the latest.

ELA--Students need to take home their vocabulary test and get it signed. Return it to school tomorrow. I will collect their Unit 9 vocabulary booklet tomorrow. They should be practicing reading their word scene out loud and remember to pronounce the words correctly and have intonation in their voice. We will begin presenting them tomorrow.
Math--Students received their exam checklist today, and they have an assignment on perfect squares and square roots due tomorrow. Students need to review concepts each night. ELA--The students should have the rough draft of their persuasive essay completed for Tuesday. We will then be typing it, having a peer edit and a self edit before the good copy is completed. Hopefully the final copy can be completed by the end of next week. Students are also working on the rough draft of the vocabulary scene. The due date for this assignment will depend on the time given to work on it next week. The vocabulary test will probably be the end of next week. The second book project is also due by the end of next week.

Carman Collegiate is hosting two Track and Field Meets in the next few weeks. If any students are interested in participating in the Gr. 5-8 Invitational Meet on May 26, they need to sign up with me and pay $2 to Kyla by Tuesday. The meet will run from 1:00 to 5:00 next Thursday. The Hershey Track Meet is on June 2 and the students also need to sign up with me. There is a minimum of 2 entries per meet. Hopefully we will have many students interested in the meets.

Daily Update--April 26/11
ELA--We have several assignments happening right now. The vocabulary test for unit 7 will be written on Friday. The students are in groups and they are composing skits using the vocabulary words. This will be their "Evidence of Learning" for this unit. We are hoping that the performances can occur on Friday, but it depends on time limits/work periods this week. The mind map for Shakespeare is due either this Friday or Monday, if students feel they need more time. Class time is being given to work on this assignment this week. Today we started the log entry for Act 1,Scene 1. No due date has been set for this assignment yet. A few students have not yet handed in their book project/IRP so they will be spending noon hours in the classroom until it is handed in.

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a relaxing spring break! Now back to assignments and homework. ELA--Students updated their March calendars today and it looks like we have met our March class reading goal. I will be collecting the journals and double checking the totals. We have also signed our April calendar. Students should be reviewing their unit 6 vocabulary words as their test is on Wednesday. Math--Worksheet 8.1 is due for tomorrow. All questions have been assigned. SS--Map work page was assigned, with the knowledge that they will have 20 minutes in class to complete the last few questions. It was great to see students and parents at the conferences last night and today. For the students and parents who were not able to make it, please call me after the break and we can make alternate arrangements.

Daily Update-March 4/11
ELA--This is the last weekend to work on book projects. Four should be handed in by Thursday. Rough draft of the short stories is due next Wednesday.
Math--We started 6.5--Division of fractions. I assigned worksheet 6.4--#1 to 4, #5 a and c, #6 a and b, #7, and in problem format #10 for Monday.
SS--All project work for the Layered Egyptian Project is due Tuesday. Remember to hand in signed rubrics and tests.

Daily Update--Feb.28/11
Wow! It is the last day of February. Can you believe it!
ELA--Students should be working on their book project. The fourth and final one is due by next Thursday. For this last one, students have the choice of either doing a book project or writing an IRP similar to the ones they wrote in the first term. They still have the outline and list of questions in their reading journals. February reading calendars are due tomorrow.
Math--We have not finished correcting the work from last week. If anyone is having difficulty, they need to come in for extra Math help at noon.
Science--The design project is due Thursday.

Health--A quiz on the Bones video notes (from today) will be written on Wednesday.

Daily Update--Feb.23/11
ELA--Students should have already handed in their third book project. We discussed the fourth and last project for this term, and we have decided that it can be either a book project OR an IRP response similar to the ones they did in the first term. Some students really enjoyed working on those so they have a chance to write one this term. Grammar project will be due either by Friday or by Monday, if anyone needs more time.
Math--We did not have enough time to correct the entire assignment from yesterday, so students should check to make sure it is completed and correct.

ELA--Students should have atleast 5, if not all, sentences for their grammar root word project done for tomorrow so I can edit with them. I am looking for accurate use of the word, as well as a variety in sentence structure. We are also writing the vocabulary unit 5 test tomorrow.

I hope everyone enjoyed their unexpected day off. I will have to make some changes to your homework.
ELA--The unit 5 vocabulary test will now be written on Wednesday, just in case some of you were thinking of taking the booklet home today. (It really should have been taken home every night this week.) Use the long weekend to complete your third book project, and to work on your grammar project--definitions and sentences. This project will probably be due by the end of next week.
Science--I am sure you will have to write your quiz on Light Sources on Tuesday.

ELA--Students should have their 10 words (root word project) chosen and defined so they can start constructing descriptive sentences. A due date will be set tomorrow in class. Vocabulary test for unit 5 will be written on Tuesday. Review words every night. The third book project should be completed or very close to completion, and ready to hand in by Tuesday.
Science--Light sources quiz is tomorrow.
The band concert slated for tonight has been postponed due to the weather.

We wrote our Math assessment today, and it took most of the morning.
ELA--Students should be working on their grammar root word project--finding 10 words with the root word that they have chosen. Write out the definitions. They should also be working on their book project. Vocabulary unit 5 test is on Tuesday.
SS--The test is tomorrow. Students were given a chance to come into class after the Math exam to update their notes. They can also use their textbook for any definitions that they may not have.

Tomorrow is the Math Assessment. It is important to go over any concepts which you are not certain about, find questions in the textbook or on old tests or on the review sheets, and work through them.
Have a good night's sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast.
Remember to bring all of your supplies for tomorrow. The list will be on the board to remind you.
I am in the classroom by 8:00 again tomorrow, so if you can, come in for extra help.

Math--The exam is on Wednesday, so students should be reviewing for atleast one hour the next two nights. They have the list of concepts which they should be looking over, and asking questions in class if they are unsure of any concepts. I have given them questions to work through tonight as well. Go over previous tests for extra questions.
