ELA--Our reading contracts are due Monday so I hope the students are challenging themselves to reach their individual goals. Some students asked to have their IRP handed in on Monday so make certain they are.
Math--We will be writing a Mid-Unit Test on Wednesday. Students have been given a checklist in their daily assignment scribbler. They also have a review worksheet and have been assigned #2,3,4, 5 b and c, #8 a and b, and #12 a for Monday. We had a short in-class assessment last week and a rewrite yesterday. Students should be bringing those home for signatures and returning them to class on Monday.
SS--Students should be working on their personal timelines which are tentatively due next Friday.

ELA--The word illustration for the "Evidence of Learning" will be due by Thursday morning. They should review for the vocabulary test which will be written Thursday morning. They should also be working on their IRP due Thursday.
Math--Students should review prime factorization and square roots for a very short assessment tomorrow (9 Questions).

Daily Update--Sept.26/11
In ELA, the students are working on their "Evidence of Learning" illustration. They have been given an outline describing the criteria. This is due either Wednesday or Thursday. We will also be writing a unit test on Vocabulary Unit 1 words on Thursday so the students should be reviewing the words every night. Go over definitions, synonyms, and be able to use the words correctly in their own sentences. Their first IRP reading response is also due by the end of the week. If for some reason they need the weekend to complete it, they need to speak to me before Thursday.
In Math, we did not correct the work that was assigned on Friday because the Gym Riot happened today during our Math class.
In Science, the students need to try and catch some grasshoppers for their dissection.

Daily Update--Sept. 22/11
In ELA we chose our words for the "Evidence of Learning" assignment. Students need to illustrate the word as well as have the synonym, definition, and a complete, descriptive sentence along with the illustration. We went over the hand out and they were shown some examples. We will work on this tomorrow and will choose a due date at that time.
Math--We reviewed a new concept--estimating square roots-- and I assigned from worksheet #3.3--# 1 to 4 to be done on the sheet, and then #5 and 7 to be done in their scribbler. Due tomorrow.

Daily Update--Sept.21/11
In ELA, we did not get a chance to correct the green adjective sheet, but we will so do tomorrow. Please check to make sure you have it completed. You should also have chosen the book that you will write your reading response to, and begin writing it. The first IRP (reading response) is due end of next week.
In Math, we worked on Mental Math, and we wrote a short assessment on perfect squares and square roots. No homework tonight.

Daily update--Sept.20/11
In ELA--Students need to be sure their vocabulary booklet is completed for tomorrow. We were working on adjectives today, and the students have one page to complete in the booklet--page 46 for tomorrow.
In Math--do your corrections from the 3.1 textbook work which we corrected today.
I am still waiting for some students to hand in a signed purple information letter from last week. That needs to handed in asap.

Daily Update--Sept.19/11
ELA--Today we corrected the section on synonyms and antonyms in the vocabulary unit. They have now been assigned the remainder of the booklet due Wednesday. I hope students will begin their individual reading response by first choosing which book they will want to respond to.
Math--We corrected the worksheet #3.1, and now I have assigned from the textbook pages 85-87--# 6,8,10,12,15,17,19, and #25 due tomorrow. They did have atleast 20 minutes in class to work on this. It is to be done in their daily assignment scribbler and in pencil. We will be correcting in class tomorrow.
I have reminded students that if they have not done so yet, they need to hand in their registration form ,their paper fee money, their signed purple information letter, and their vaccination form. Some students have not handed in their kleenex boxes yet.

We have successfully completed a full week of school!

We discussed our Independent reading program (IRP) today and students now know what to do after they have read a book. Please ask them to see the handout outlining the criteria. ELA--The friendly letter to me is due tomorrow. Remember to have the jot notes, the rough draft, and the good copy ready to hand in. We started our vocabulary unit today. We read over and discussed the 20 new words, and then I assigned the next page--Synonyms and Antonyms--for homework. It is due Monday. The students usually have two school days to complete this section.

ELA--Daily reading. The good copy of the friendly letter is due Friday at the beginning of the class. The rough draft was to be done today, and students self-editted today. Tomorrow we may have about 15 minutes to work on the good copy which is due Friday.

Science--Characteristic Chart is due tomorrow.

Daily Update--Sept.13/11
ELA--The students should be reading every night. The rough draft of their friendly letter is due tomorrow so they can self-edit, and then have the good copy completed and handed in by Friday, the latest. I want them to edit on their own as this will be the first writing sample of the year. As we do more writing, I will be editting with them.
I handed out an informational letter to the students (printed on purple paper) to give to their parents. It is a short summary of what has already been covered in class, as well as an opportunity for me to inform the parents of what is going on in the subject areas. I have asked the students to get this letter signed by their parents, and return the letter to me tomorrow.

Sorry that I am writing this right now, but I could not get on the internet earlier.
ELA--The students are reading every evening for atleast 20 minutes minimum. They are also working on their friendly letter to me. We have discussed the format and the criteria for this letter. A sample has also been given to the students. They are to have the rough draft done by the end of tomorrow's ELA class. They will then have to proof read and edit it, and have the final good copy completed for Thursday, we hope. That is the plan at this time, and we will see how everything goes in class.
Science-- Their title page is due tomorrow.
Registration forms and paper fees are due to the office, as well as the letter that was sent home on Friday in regards to vaccinations.
It was unfortunate that the Gym Riot did not happen today, but hopefully it will be rescheduled. The students did get to have their first class of Practical Skills which was good.

For homework, students need to bring in their registration forms and $5 paper fee to the office asap. Student membership fees will be sold in front of the office starting Monday, and they are $10.
ELA--Students need to read for ten minutes (or more) each evening throughout the weekend. We started a friendly letter, but nothing has been assigned for homework.
Science--The title page is due Tuesday.
The gym riot will be held on Monday afternoon, so students are encouraged to wear their team colours.
Have a great weekend!

Daily Update--Sept.7/11
Welcome everyone to our new school year!
I hope the students had an interesting day today. I was excited to meet all the grade 8 students, and am looking forward to a great year.
Students were given my home phone number, my school email address, and this blog site which I hope they have shared with their parents. I will try to update the site every night with homework, test dates, and due dates.
For tomorrow, students need to bring in their signed registration package, their $5 paper fee, and their school supplies which we talked about today.
Have an enjoyable evening, and I'll see everyone tomorrow.
